
Introduction:
Catgut suture its a type of surgical suture, which is made up of twisted stands of purified collagen which is taken from small intestine of sheep or goats. It’s treated with chromic acid salts, it’s naturally degraded by the body’s own proteolytic enzymes. Al- Zahrawi was the first person to use catgut for internal stitches.
Types:
1- Plain : This is fast absorbing monofilament type suture, thread is approximately 90% collagen made by twisting together stands of collagenous material.

2- Chromic: This is also a monofilament type, it’s a natural surgical gut suture. It’s processed to give higher resistence for adsorption and treated with chromic salts to slow the absorption process.

Absorptions:
Initial tensile strength lost within 14 to 21 days and completely absorbed in 90 days to 120 days.
Uses:
Obstetrics/gynecology, general soft tissue closure, urology, ophthalmic and gastro-intestinal tract surgery.
Sterilization:
Sterilized by sterilizing fluid containing Ethylene Oxide, isopropyl alcohol and distilled water.
